Is this really what happened to POE?

"So where has she been? Apparently, Poe signed a really fucked up contract that prohibited her from releasing music under a different record label for a period of time rumored to be around 7 years after the release of Haunted. I don't understand it either, people. But Atlantic had no interest in distributing her music anymore, So if the label you are still in contract with won't distribute your music, what the hell do you do? Musically, a lot of nothing. Which is unfortunately what Poe had to do and has been doing for the past 7+ years. It's unfortunate and disturbing that a record company that has no interest in releasing albums from a particular artist won't let that artist pursue his/her career elsewhere. But, if I am correct, that contract has expired by this time. There's been no word from Poe on her website or her MySpace page about upcoming work yet. But hopefully it won't be long now. It's been a long wait since Haunted, but I have a feeling that it will be well worth the wait. Eight years is a long time to build up a back catalogue of great songs."

So is this really what happened to POE?  I mean its bad enough that artists don't get to own what comes from their soul, but under contract, they owned her as well?

OMG...  So for 7 years her label would not release any of her future albums, yet musically she could not work with anyone else to release her music?  And they just held onto her and kept her in this limbo?

I'm seething just reading this...

Cited by http://earcandies.blogspot.com/2008/01/poe-what-hell.html:

This was talked about in length on the old Angry Psychos e-mail list shortly after Poe was released by Atlantic. She floated around for a while trying to get her rights back, but was unsuccesful. What happened to her after 2002? Well, she sent out an e-mail in 2008 I believe (I may be off by a year or two) saying that she has lots in store for us and then she opened www.repoezessed.com and even sent the Poe Ball on tour for a little while. Things were gathering steam once again!

She did a few CDs with Conjure One, the second album under the name Jane so that she wouldn't get sued by Atlantic.

And then she disappeared (along with the Poe Ball). That is the last we have heard from her officially. In January 2010 Angie sent an e-mail blast to everyone who signed up at the repoezessed site saying that this website we are on right now is the new home of Poe and that great things are coming very soon!! Well, one year later there is still nothing.

I've stopped getting excited at this point. I still enjoy listening to her music and will continue to do so until she comes back with new stuff.

Thank you so much, Ryan.

The thing is, fans I've met like you are so phonetic.  So cool to chat with.  I love her fans.  That tells me that she's something meant to be big.  I just felt so bad back then when I bought Haunted, that there was such little buzz surrounding it.  The world wasn't ready for her.

The world is now.

Poe... come out, come out wherever you are.

I will be patient with you Ryan, and when she comes she comes :) ... as long as she comes.

i luv poe, i will buy her music whenever it comes out, but i feel that the world will never b ready 4 poe, which is a shame. people want what they can digest & throw away. there isn't much room 4 mainstream music that isn't crap. that's my opinion n e way. not that us angry psychos r like the rest of the people in the world, def not in this country. i luv discoverin artists that peak my interest w/ unique sounds & songs that speak 2 me, none of which r n e where near mainstream in the US. i hope w/ all my might that poe returns & she's prosperous & if she has a mega mainstream hit, i will B glad 2 say i was wrong about the world

Yeah Dustin, but maybe she'll get the cult following she deserves.  I agree with you, I love discovering artists with unique sounds that I can treasure.  All these years and I'm coming back listening to Haunted and its sound still defies today's standards.

I love Poe and I love her brother.  Both of them speak of transcendentalism.  Both of them want to further our kind.  Those people that don't get them, aren't evolved enough.  Aren't high enough.  We are meant to be higher beings and we all need to embrace that.

Then the music and words will come to us.

Her voice made an appearence in Repo! The Genetic Opera as Single Mother (uncredited) and on backing vocals. Haunted made an appearence on Alan Wake.

@Jack(this forum needs a quote button)- It's more that MTV wasn't ready for her, beyond the Hey Pretty remix.

Longing and abiding... I've become a murderer since the last album... killing mercilessly. I've killed so many that  i've lost count of. Maybe besides the shadows beneath my eyes or a terribly thin line near the corner of my mouth indicating something has been suffered, been killing without leaving any evidence. Killing on cravings... and  killing on vain sense. Killing without any blood.

Yes, Poe was in legal hell. She wrote a piece of satire that explains as much as she could tell us:

http://www.realpoe.com/gallery/ramblings/thepsycho.htm

And if you have the patience to read about 30 pages of legalese, you can read this:

http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/TAC/41-03.pdf

It sounded like things were looking up for her legally with some of the posts on her various official sites within the past few years, but no news recently. The fact that she's able to play her own work live is probably a good sign. Or at least it's not a bad sign...

Well, there are sooo many other people out there, who have fallen into traps as well. Err... contracts... But in today's day and age, A single "Hit" post on youtube can generate over a million hits, there is really no excuse to move on to other projects. I could quote many, many bands that are involved in an insane number of projects and side projects" but I won't.

But my point is, if the Talent, Desire, and creativity continure to move you, then a sigle post, under other project names, can easily and by far gain more followers than the 2785 listed currently on this page.

An enduring Person, trancends group name, titles, and affiliations, and would probably garner more loyal subjects that follow the person over the name. When a single post, now adays can generate up to 200000 plays in a single day, there is absolutely no reason not to move on to one's own creative mettle, and revisit the "Branded, band name"  later if at some point she wishes to.

But seriously, with only 2700 listed, there is realy almost no reason to look back even.   A single Successful post, under another project name, can and should put the counter here to shame. hell, I think I have more followers on web sites that I have long since forgotten even.

Though I love the poe stuff as well, but Move on.  Keep working, and do something else.  Sheeple will follow you, not the name.  And who knows.... the next "Hit"  could make the Poe following look like 7 inch limited relase on vynal.

Those are just my thoughts anyway.

Seeing as the 90s are over and the modern scene is something inexplicable and... well... different, I don't see where Poe will fit in unless she changes her style, which I would hope she wouldn't do.

Even if she comes back, her second debut will be quite a small deal and will likely only open the doors to a few people to learn about Poe, and only interest us fans.

And that's just the way we want it!! :D

The whole music scene today has been exponentially dumbed down since the time when Poe got airplay. Sadly most people don't have the attention span, or the appreciation of music anymore. They might get exposed to a good song, and be indifferent to it, but when its featured on their favorite tv show, all the sudden it's their anthem. I just described my little sister, anyhow...... A lot of good artist went through the same thing Poe did, one of my favorite bands, dada were dropped by IRS and had to turn the tour bus around in the middle of a tour promoting a masterpiece of an album called "el subliminoso". No one ever got to hear this album. I trade a lot of mixes with people and always try to put a Poe song in the mix, as it fits in well with most of the compilations I make. Hope I've turned a few folks on to her excellent music.

Didn't she have some random youtube videos up at one point? Anyway I love Poe so much. I'm actually in the middle of reading House of Leaves for the first time and I'm now starting to appreciate Haunted more, even though it was one of my favorite albums to begin with.

Also, I do not believe that Poe needs to "change her style" drastically to have some success. I mean she wasn't exactly Top 40 even in her "time" as you might say. She always marched to the beat of her own drum, that's what got her noticed to begin with. Yes, Top 40 may be out of reach for her even more nowadays but there's something to be said for the number of indie acts who have found success in recent years. I don't see why she can't have the same, not to mention the number of fans who discovered her music during the ten years she's been missing from the scene.

I mean look at Cibo Matto: resurrected from a ten-year grave and here they are today, touring, working on new music. And people are going to their shows.

Maybe we are underestimating the public. What if her brand of seething poetry backed by complex but intuitive alternative rock is exactly what the bleak state of rock music needs today.

  • 1 year later...

Yep, i know what you mean. I still think that if she wanted to work,  just do it in her own name, like many other performers.

Unless the contract expressly forbade it, but I didn't think they could?

Right...so something else must be going on with Poesky I think.  If she doesn't want to sing anymore - at least for us, the public - I would think she would send a message here and then terminate this website.  Otherwise, what is the point of keeping it going?  Somebody wrote a while back in response to one of my ramblings, "I can see her now, just working at "The Gap" or something like that... or having a family, while we are here wondering what the heck is going on??" lol....surely not, but I understood what he was saying......

I wonder why she doesn't do the music in her name only, like, I've said before, Ani Difranco does.  If she indeed does want to, that is......it's a mystery...lol....

I think even the hardcore of us have all but given up. I think it was 2012 when she had those videos on YouTube. That was the last thing. We've all been let down so many times since Atlantic dropped her. First with the whole Repoe Records where she was basically going to produce her own album, then the Poe Ball fiasco, and then that website shut down and now we have this one that opened several years ago with a message that great things were coming. I seriously wonder what she is doing these days. Even her brother has stopped writing books.
